A lady has her menstrual bleeding for nearly 15 days as she is wearing an IUD for contraception. Otherwise her normal period is only for 6 or 7 days. In regards to her prayer and fasting, how is she supposed to count the days?

Zaynab El-Kateb:

The woman who had her menstrual bleeding for 15 days because of contraception, firstly, she has to know that contraception is allowed within conditions, either for a health issue or for organizing the pregnancy to be for example every 2 years. Otherwise it is not permissible to take contraceptives.
in the case of this lady, I advise her to ask her doctor and check if the blood is menstrual or non menstrual. if it is menstrual blood, then it is considered her period, and she cannot pray or fast until it finishes.

It is the menstrual blood but it gets prolonged because of the IUD. She does not have health issues and she is a young lady. Her youngest child is above 2 years.

Zaynab El-Kateb:

Regarding her present condition, she is now in her menstrual period and she cannot pray or fast till it is completed. Although, she needs to know that it is not permissible to take contraception in her case, especially because it affects her prayers. It is a serious matter, because now she is leaving her obligatory prayer without any necessity or valid reason, and finally, if Allah wills that she gets pregnant then the contraception will never prevent this, and this is what the Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention and grant him peace, told the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, when they told him that they isolate to prevent pregnancy.
