Expiation for breaking a vow to Allah

Home / Fiqh / Expiation for breaking a vow to Allah

Question:

Five years back while I was in the state of ihram in hajj I vowed in front of the Kabah that I will never cut my hair if Allah returns it back to how it was. I was nearly bald after delivery and it’s a lot better now but I was never able to keep the vow. I personally like short hair.
What’s the ruling regarding my situation and is there anything I can do to get out of this vow.

Umm Abdel-Malik:

If your intention was to leave your vowing then you expiate it by feeding ten poor persons or by providing them with clothing or by fasting three days.
Cutting your hair either like men or like the disbelievers is forbidden. If you cut it unnecessarily (بلا ضرورة), even if it has no resemblance with men or disbelieving women, it’s still disliked and Allah knows best.
