Feeling very ill but continuing to fast

Home / Fasting and Ramadhan / Feeling very ill but continuing to fast

Today I was fasting but I had unbearable leg cramps. Alhamdulillah I was able to complete my fast but still the cramps are severe. Do you know anything that will help my situation?
I have never fasted so long hours, from 3:30am to 9:30 pm in my home country, so I think I’m dehydrated.
I really want to fast tomorrow and I’m feeling miserable.

Zaynab El-Kateb:

We need to agree that you are fasting for Allah’s sake and not as a custom or an honored habit.
Then our fasting needs to be according to Allah’s Legislation, not according to our opinions and feelings.
In your case, we need to identify what the Legislation is.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,

” إن الله يحب أن تؤتى رخصه.”

Allah loves that His slaves take with His licenses.”

You see, Allah loves that if you are ill then you break your fast and compensate it later.
So if the fasting is harming your health, it is recommended by Legislation to break it and you should not feel any guilt because you are now proving that you are fasting for Allah and not according to a custom. Allah loves that you do this.
If you feel better and you can fast, try to drink water as much as possible between iftar (breaking of the fast) and suhur (meal before starting to fast).
You should not feel miserable because you are following Allah’s rulings in every situation and this is the true worship.
