Giving zakah to institutions instead to giving it directly to needy people

Home / Q&A / Giving zakah to institutions instead to giving it directly to needy people

Question:

Is it permissible to give zakah money to a school principal so as to give scholarships to poor children to attend the school? The money will go towards a poor child’s tuition to the school and also school supplies and food for the child. May Allah reward you with goodness.

Sheikh Adel As-Sayed:

The Zakah has to be given directly to the poor person, to make the poor own the money. In some cases if the poor is not on his correct mind or cannot handle his affairs then in this case you can buy things for him on his behalf, but this will be you buying it for this specific poor person.
