Can I pray in another language other than arabic?

Question:

Is it allowed to pray in any other language than Arabic? What should a new Muslim that does not speak Arabic do in terms of her prayer?

Shaykh ‘Adil As Sayyed:

She has to memorize al-Fatihah and the Tahiyyaat (what is to be said while sitting after two units of prayer and/or at the end of the prayer). She should start by memorising these two things and use them in her prayers, this is what is strictly necessary; and of course she can say “Subhana Rabbi al-Adheem” and  “Subhana Rabbi al-A’la”. This is what is needed. Other than that, she can supplicate to Allah during sujood or after the tahiyyaat in her own language; but she should do her best to memorise al-Fatihah and at-Tahiyyat.

There is also a fatwa * saying that – until she memorizes surah al-fatihah – she can do “tasbeeh” (saying “subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, la ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar) in its place while standing.

(*) Shaykh Al Albani stated that in his book ‘The Prophet’s prayer described.
