Making up the missed prayers due to istihadha (thinking it was menses)

Home / Menses - Istihaadhah / Making up the missed prayers due to istihadha (thinking it was menses)

Question:

I did not pray for two days as I assumed I was on my period but then it turned out that it was abnormal bleeding outside of menstruation. How exactly do I make up for these prayers ? At what time, in which order, how many at once? How ?

Zaynab El-Kateb:

  1. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen said:
If a woman saw blood and thought it was menses, so she left prayers, then she discovered that it was just Istihadha, then this has two choices:
She is not requested to compensate (pray) what she left, this is because the Prophet, peace be upon him, when a Sahabiyah told him that she stopped praying during Istihadha, he did not command her to compensate for what she left.
  2. She can compensate, as a preferred choice, but not obligatory.

Compensation of missed prayers are done consecutively. For example asr, maghrib, ishaa, fajr, zuhr, asr, maghrib…,
But in case it was out of a valid excuse, some Scholars said you can divide them among longer period of time.
This is the fatwa:
