Question:

What is the exact meaning of السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته. (As salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh)?
When we say salam does that mean that we pray to Allah for Allah to be pleased with the brother to whom to salam is directed to on the Day of Judgement and for Allah to have mercy on him and bestow His blessings in this world and on the Day of Judgement? Please explain in detail so that we could give salam with correct understanding.
May Allah reward you with goodness.

Zaynab El-Kateb:

Meaning of السلام عليكم (As salamu alaikum):
When you say it to someone, you are asking Allah to protect him/her in his religion and his body and health. So it is a supplication. Then you can add asking mercy and blessings by saying ورحمة الله وبركاته (wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh.)
