The remembrances are to be said after obligatory prayers

Question:

I have a question regarding prayer. After I pray the obligatory prayer and I utter my remembrances, should I move to another place for praying Sunnah or voluntary prayer and do I have to do dhikr after the Sunnah and voluntary prayers? Jazak Allahu khayran.

Umm Abdel-Malik:

It’s not upon her to move to another place since she has read her remembrances of Allah (adhkar) and they aren’t obligatory but Sunnah and this act has tremendous virtues. There is a hadith which says that the Angels ask forgiveness for her as long as she is sitting in her prayer place and she doesn’t break her ablution (wudhu).

This is a verdict of Shaikh Ibn Baz:

Question:

Can the remembrances of Allah and supplications after the obligatory prayer be made after the optional prayer?
What are the supplications and remembrances of Allah narrated from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety)?

Answer:

All the remembrances narrated from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety) are to be said after the obligatory prayers.
After the optional prayers there is nothing to be recited except seeking forgiveness (istighfaar).
When one says the closing salutations of prayer (tasleem) from the optional prayer he should say, “astaghfirullah (O Allah forgive me), astaghfirullah (O Allah forgive me), astaghfirullah (O Allah forgive me),”
“O Allah! You are the Giver of security and security comes from You; Blessed are You. O Possessor of Majesty and honour”.

As for the other remembrances, all of them are to be done after the obligatory prayers however this (the above one) is after the optional and obligatory prayers.

Thaubaan, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Whenever the Messenger of Allah (may Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety) finished his prayer, he would beg forgiveness three times and then he would say, ‘O Allah! You are the Giver of security and security comes from You; Blessed are You. O Possessor of Majesty and honour’ .” [Narrated by Muslim and others.]

He didn’t say “the obligatory prayer” so it is an evidence that it is after every prayer, the obligatory and the optional.

As for the dhikr, like,
“None has the right to be worshipped except Allah Alone, without partner. His is the dominion and to Him belongs all praise. He gives life and causes death and He has power over all things…” and “There is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner with Him, His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent”, they come after the obligatory prayers and it hasn’t reached us from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety) that they are to be made except after the obligatory prayers and it hasn’t reached us that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety) did it after the optional prayers.
