I came across the question and answer of a Scholar where the questioner asked about the age at which a woman should wear hijab in front of boys and the answer was roughly 7 years. My son aged 8 years has friends aged 8, 9, and 10 and they consider our apartment as their own, they come and go all day long. I will be cleaning or doing household chores most of the time without covering. Does covering mean complete veiling or does it mean just cloth to cover the body minus the head?
Umm Abdel-Malik and Zaynab El-Kateb:
First you need to start teaching your son not to get his friends accustomed to going in and out of your home this way. There should be privacy for your home.
The woman must wear a complete covering ie. veil in front of a mature boy despite of what his age is. In the case of boys over seven years, we need to see if the boy can distinguish (meaning that he can notice the beauty of a woman) or not. If he can, then she covers herself in front of him—at least her hair and her body—but if he can’t (notice her beauty), there is nothing upon her if she wears the same clothes she wears in front of her non-marriageable male relatives (mahaarim).”
